The first sampling for the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Gulf of Kavala was carried out in November 2024, followed by a second in March, in view of the implementation of the carbon dioxide storage investment in Prinos being developed by EnEarth, a subsidiary of Energean.

The sampling was carried out using the research vessel "Filia" of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, within the framework of the COREu pilot research program. The purpose of the sampling is to record the natural occurrences of carbon dioxide in the Gulf of Kavala and the parameters that affect them, so that there is a comparison sample during the environmental monitoring of the storage project, when it is put into operation from 2027 onwards.

The carbon dioxide storage project in Prinos, together with the COREu pilot program, are integrated into the European Union's overall climate policy and the effort to support industries in reducing their carbon dioxide emissions, limiting the related costs that burden them and promoting the transition to a more sustainable world.

The COREu administrator is the independent organization SINTEF and approximately 40 partners, such as universities, research centers, administrative authorities and businesses from Europe, participate in the program.
