A decisive step towards the implementation of the first carbon dioxide storage facility in the Mediterranean has been taken with the award of the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) to Kent Plc . The decision by EnEarth (a subsidiary of Energean) marks the start of the technical implementation of a project that will change the course of the domestic industry.
The Technical Object
Kent, a global giant in the field of engineering services, is called upon to design the infrastructure for the management and injection of CO2 at a depth of more than 3 kilometers below the Prinos reservoir.
According to the design:
Capacity: The facility will process up to 2.8 million tonnes per year (MTPA) of liquid CO2 .
Logistics: The dioxide will be transported by ships to a new marine terminal at the "Sigma" land facilities in Nea Karvali .
Infrastructure: A new subsea pipeline will be constructed connecting the onshore facilities to an autonomous injection platform.
Funding and Importance
The project has already secured an environmental permit and a storage permit, and is part of the EU's Projects of Common Interest (PCIs). Its funding comes from:
The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The Greek Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF).
Timetable
The full operation of the facility is scheduled for the period 2029-2030 , offering a critical outlet for Greek industry to reduce its environmental footprint and strengthen its competitiveness at the European level.
